Competition Winners Announced
On January 21st, the Dutch Hat Association, De Nederlandse Hoeden Vereniging (NHV), held their yearly National Hat Day celebrations. Known as Landelijke Hoedendag, this exciting event was held in the Dutch city of Utrecht and included workshops, lectures, trade stalls and a fashion show featuring the hats of five members of the NHV.
There were a number of useful workshops (pictured left - photo courtesy of Mar
cella de Bruijn) available for hat makers to attend, including a workship on hat photography, one on running your own millinery business and another on creating your own hatpin. All of the workshops provided opportunities for milliners to share techniques and ideas with one another. There were also a variety of demonstrations throughout the day. For instance, you could learn how to felt wool, how to use a leather sewing machine or a hat steamer.
A highlight of the day was the announcement of the winners of this year's NHV Hat Competition, Met de Hoed de Wereld Rond, which is translated With the Hat Around the World. This year's competition theme was the Arctic/Antartic. Three milliners, Clementine Jesterhoudt, Meta Leefkens and Trudi Windau, were awarded the Professional Prizes. Clementine won first prize with her lichen shaped felt fascinator Hypogyma Physodes, which is pictured above (photo by Lenny Moeskops). The Public Prize winners were Maike de Vries, Clementine Jesterhoudt, with another of her hats, and Myra van de Korput. All six of the winning hats are showcased in this month's issue of HATalk.
